If google uses in there algorythms a way to check domain name registry duration you can see logically that google would prefer a domain name that has been bought with the intention of creating a good website judging it by the duration of the domain registry, not to say you don’t have the intention with a domain name bought for one year but its quite a different mentality that is for me it is, if i want to create a great website then my intention is for the long run, now if i just wanted a domain were i may use it to test out or drive traffic to as an experiment on a pay per click campaign then one year would be good enough.

Also with namecheap you get 1 years whoisguard which protects your name and address to be available to the public from anyone trying to do a domain name check on you which is also a bonus but remember next year they will be charging around $7 for this and that does depend if you want to keep your domain name though.
